Take One Picture
During the last two weeks we have been studying a picture from an Aboriginal Artist that illustrates one of the Dreamtime creation stories. At the start of the project we became detectives and used our inference and deduction skills to collect different clues before writing our own prediction about what the picture may look like. Some of us recognised a variety of Australian animals in the picture which helped us to understand where the picture was created. We then developed our Geography skills by researching the Australian flags (National Flag, Aboriginal Flag, Torres Strait Islander Flag) and studying the country’s location. Everyone really enjoyed this project and we have already learnt so much.
As well as this, in our writing, we had the opportunity to learn and retell the Aboriginal story of the Rainbow Serpent. Firstly, we listen to the story of the Rainbow Serpent retold by an Aboriginal lady; then we had the chance to create a storyboard to help us remember the events of the story. After spending some time retelling the story to our partner in the classroom, we took our learning outside and stepped out the story on the playground which was really fun! Here are some photos:
We had the opportunity to study the different Australian Aboriginal patterns and symbols during our art project. Once we had researched and identified the different symbols, we had the chance to trial out using different methods to create our own Aboriginal pictures. Here are some amazing examples of our work:
