Take One Tune

During our first week back we completed our Take One Piece project. This involved investigating a piece of music, a composer and composing our own piece of music in a similar style.

Sycamore looked at the piece of music titled: ‘A Short Ride in a Fast Machine’ composed by John Adams. To start our learning we listened to the piece of music and considered what we thought the title and the story behind the music could be. We then considered the different words we could use to describe Adam’s composition, here is the Tagxedo we created:

We had an idea to recreate ‘A Short Ride in a Fast Machine’ using a variety of instruments. We started by working in small groups to investigate the instrument we had chosen and then spent time composing a short piece of music that contained repeating patterns. Each group recorded their music on a stave and created their own form of notation to follow. After a bit of practise in our groups, following our own staves, we then had a chance to practice with a constant pulse (the wooden block). At this stage, we discussed how we could perform a piece of music including each group and their order. Every group had the opportunity to share their own with the class before we had a practise run through all together.

It was then time to have a run through as a whole class, here are some photographs of our musical instruments in order that they are introduced to our version of ‘A Short Ride in a Fast Machine’:

Finally, we performed the piece as a whole class and recorded it on the iPad. We focused on created a minimalist piece in the style of John Adams. Watch and listen closely – can you here the constant pulse? What instrument do we use to create this sound?

After this, we then listened to our minimalist piece and considered the different words we could use to describe it using a wordle:

On Friday Cedar and Sycamore classes shared their Take One Piece. We learnt some much and it was extremely interesting to find out what other classes had been learning about.
