Term 1

Start of Term

At the start of this term Sycamore created a class chant based on the chorus of Katy Perry's song 'Roar!'. You can find a copy of this below:

We are a working class, a fun team,

Helping through the friendship.

‘Cause we’re all champions and you’re going to watch us learn.

Smarter, smarter than the rest.

‘Cause we’re all champions and you’re going to watch us learn.

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh (x3)

We are Sycamore.

The Sycamore Challenge - Team Building Skills:

During the first week of term Sycamore were given a task - to create the tallest paper structure which would hold a large rock! The children were given the following materials: newspaper, masking tape and string. In groups they had to plan, design and make a structure, within a set time of 20 minutes, and then trial their model out in a showdown.

Everyone worked extremely hard and by the end of the afternoon had created a model that was able to hold a rock! Here are some pictures of our models:

Earth Trust - Survival Day

On Monday 14th September, Sycamore Class went on a visit to Earth Trust. We had a brilliant day and learnt about different survival techniques. Our day started by learning how to build our own fires using cotton wool, wood shavings, leaves and twigs – we had the extra challenge of trying to build fires while it was raining (a top skill to have). In the afternoon we went for a walk to the top of Wittenham Clumps and saw the beautiful view (some of us were able to run all the way to the top of the hill…while others like Miss Hillier had to walk!) before heading into the woods.

We spent the rest of the day designing and creating our own waterproof dens out of natural materials – some of the groups even starting to consider the home comforts like a coffee table, sofa, toilet and bed! Here are a few photos of our dens:

Sycamore and Cedar Buddy Reading

On Friday 25th September, Sycamore and Cedar took part in some buddy reading. We started by getting to know each other and sharing the books we had brought. All of the children enjoyed spending time reading and discussing their books. Here are some of the photos from our reading afternoon:

Sycamore and Maple Buddy Reading

Sycamore had the chance to read with children in Maple class on Friday 2nd October. The session involved discussing and sharing books, which we were currently reading. We then went out into the Sensory Garden and took it in turns to read to each other - there were such a wide variety of books being shared! When we went back into the classroom we thought about all the different skills we had learnt and used within the session. Below are a few photos:

Harvest Festival Assembly

On Tuesday 6th October Fir Tree held their Harvest Festival Assembly. Each class took it in turns to share a poem, rap, story or piece of drama that they had been working on. Sycamore had spent time learning about the Harvest Festival and then worked individually, in pairs or small groups to write a poem. All of the children worked really hard and created some beautiful poems. Below are links to different children’s work – please feel free to have a read (they are amazing!):

Global’s Make Some Noise

On Thursday 8th October Fir Tree held a fundraising day for Global’s Make Some Noise (a Heart Radio fundraiser for charities which are not normally heard). The children were allowed to wear non-school uniform and asked to dress as loud as they could. Here is a picture of our class (we had some extremely brightly coloured items brought in):

During the morning each class took part in a Dance-A-Thon were we played lots of music and could dance with our friends for 35 minutes! All the children had a brilliant time! Here are some of the photos we took:
