Children In Need

On Thursday 12th November, Fir Tree celebrated Children In Need. All the children were able to wear non-school uniform and we had a specially designed lunch (which was very yummy!).

Sycamore’s Trip to the Library

On the Thursday 19th November. We went on a trip to the Wallingford library. When we got there, a librarian explained how the library worked (for example how to renew books and use a library card). Then we got into partners and chose some chapter books at random from a selection - we investigated the cover, blurb and first paragraph and scored these out of 5. By the end of the session each pair had found a book which they would like to read and were left to do free reading and enjoy the books further.

Christmas Craft Fayre

On Friday 27th November, Fir Tree held their annual Christmas Craft Fayre. In Sycamore class we made yule logs to sell at the Craft Fayre. We started by following a recipe to make chocolate buttercream. Here is the recipe we followed:

  1. Beat the butter in a large bowl until soft.
  2. Add half of the icing sugar / cocoa powder and beat until smooth.
  3. Add the remaining icing sugar / cocoa powder and one tablespoon of the milk and beat the mixture until creamy and smooth.
  4. Beat in the milk, if necessary, to loosen the mixture.

After that we then started to cover our chocolate mini-rolls with buttercream. We thought very carefully about how we spread the buttercream to make it look like bark – some of the yule logs looked extremely realistic. Once we had done this, our next task was to make a holly leaf – we completed this by cutting and shaping green fondant icing (to make the leaves) and red fondant icing to make the berries. Next we stuck the holly onto our yule logs and dusted with icing sugar. They looked amazing! Here is a picture of what our stall looked like:

Sycamore’s Christmas Hats and Dinner

On Tuesday 14th December, Upper School had their Christmas meal. Sycamore had a fantastic day, we had an amazing meal (the food tasted delicious), a lovely extra play and a relaxing afternoon. It was so lovely to spend the day together – thank you to everyone who made our day so special. As for our Christmas Hats – everyone’s hats were brilliant and so much effort was put into them, well done!

Congratulations to Matthew who won the Christmas Hat Competition in Sycamore!
