Maths and Geography Lesson:
Over last week we have been learning and concentrating on coordinates. Firstly, we were looking at the different parts of 4 quadrants: y-axis (vertical axis), x-axis (horizontal axis) and the origin. We discussed the different jobs that required us to have this knowledge on coordinates and practised reading/ plotting coordinates on a grid. We then developed our skills of map reading of Wallingford and Fir Tree grounds. We went outside, into the playground, and visited different places on our map (e.g. the Castle, the mound etc.) and found the different coordinates. As a class we used the coordinate grid to identify where the origin and found the location on the field.

Mr Roberts has encouraged everyone in Sycamore to practise the notes and chords we have been learning in class, at home. For people who would like some support, Mr Roberts has suggested a book which you can buy - it covers the notes and chords (we have learnt) and allows children to explore the guitar further:

Sycamore and Cedar Buddy Reading
On Friday 22nd January, Sycamore and Cedar took part in some more buddy reading. We started by getting to know each other and sharing the books we had brought. All of the children enjoyed spending time reading and discussing their books. Here are some of the photos from our reading afternoon:
Computing and Coding
On Tuesday 26th January 2016, Sycamore class did some coding on the laptops. We searched up code.org/learn and did some Star Wars themed coding. It was a bit challenging but because we were in pairs we were able to put our heads together and help each other work through each of the stages. When we had completed the 'Hour of Code' we got a certificate!
Chinese New Year
On Friday 29th January 2016 (the year of the goat) some Year 3s from Cedar came to visit Sycamore class and we completed some learning together! While they were with us we learnt about the Chinese Year (which is being celebrated on Monday 8th February). During the lesson we read the story behind the Chinese New Year, which was based on a race between lots of different animals, and then we created some Top Trump cards about the different animals of the Zodiac. As well as this we learnt that the Jade Emperor rewarded each of the animals in the race with a year named after them We depending on their position in the race (the rat coming in 1st place and the pig coming in 12th).

On Tuesday 2nd February we had a huge Maths morning. The day started with an assembly where Mrs Jackson explained what the morning was about and then we were split into different groups. Everyone had the chance to learn how maths was used in different subjects (for example how maths was used in Writing, Music, ICT and Cookery). We had a really fun morning!

Pancake Race! - Tuesday 9th February 2016
Today is Shrove Tuesday! To celebrate, Sycamore class went on a trip to Wallingford Town Centre, to watch the Year 6’s participate in the annual Pancake Race. It was an enjoyable morning where we got the chance to develop our People, Self and Values Smart skills. The Year 6’s had to run around the Town Hall twice, carrying a frying pan with a pancake inside! After watching the children’s race – where Fir Tree children (Topaz, Sophia and Harry), won prizes, we stayed to support the adults, who were also partaking in a different race. Luckily, we were able to have our photograph taken with the Mayor of Wallingford, Lynda Atkins, who was wearing her incredible medal. We can’t wait for the opportunity to run in the Pancake Race next year!
